IWSG – Anniversary Steal

The co-hosts are Jacqui Murray, Lisa Buie-Collard, Sarah Foster, Natalie Aguirre, and Shannon Lawrence!

Question - Other than the obvious holiday traditions, have you ever included any personal or family traditions/customs in your stories?

I wouldn’t call it a family tradition, but my first book, Murder, Madness & Love, was initially called Murder on the 14th. I used my anniversary date of February 14th in the story and the ceremony itself.

I also interviewed my husband about certain things and put most of his answers in the book too. Like the type of car, he'd love to own.
And, yes, I used the same car to kill my character's husband.
My husband still tells everyone I killed him off in the first chapter, and that I continue to do so in every book!
For a corpse, he looks terrific! But the best part is he lets me read him all my stories and books. Although he read the first book himself. That one, he refused to read or hear until it was published.

Do you use personal life episodes
 in your writing?

  1. My husband won't read my ms until they're novels because he says I make too changes in the process. He's right. I do. haha.

  2. I won't let my husband read anything of mine until I think it's as clean as I can get it. In fact I have a hard time letting anyone read anything of mind until that point.

  3. I've had my husband read later drafts of my stuff as well. The weird thing? He remembers what happened in my first novel better than I do. I'll take that as a compliment.

  4. My husband is my biggest fan. And he's also great with critiques - honest but kind. :)

  6. I have had my husband review the part of my work involving a firefighter character, his profession. And I could never have the firefighter be a bad guy! LOL. I've definitely used the traits of one or more people I know in characters, but never "based" on any one person.

  7. Love your post! You're so lucky someone reads your books. Can read them. Most of my family don't speak English well enough to read my stories, and they are not interested in speculative fiction (the genre I write in) at all. My kids are not interested either, even though they grew up in Canada and read English like the natives.

  8. How much fun is that?! My husband lets me try weird things on him so I can write scenes better.

  9. This was so much fun and so interesting. It's always wonderful to know about the traditions of others writers...Not literally but even the figurative traditions Incorporated by them in their MS.

  10. Your husband sounds very good humoured, not to mention resilient! This was a fun post. I still feel odd about my wife reading my books - and it's only when they're finished - but she always gives a good report.
