Murder & Obsession
Johann "Jack" Unterweger, an Austrian, was
convicted of murder but gained his release as a rehabilitation example in 1974.
But he kept killing, at least 11 more women died.
During this time, he became a journalist and was asked to
write about the differences between U. S. and European attitudes toward
prostitution. During his time in Los Angeles, and while investigating his story
the police escorted him through the red light district. He killed three LA prostitutes.
Austrian police finally figured him for their unsolved
murders and ordered his arrest. He escaped but they finally caught him and
sentenced him to life in prison without possibility of parole.
That night, he committed suicide by hanging. It's reported
that he used an intricate knot identical to that found during the murders. He
died before he could appeal the verdict, and under a technicality of Austrian
law, Unterweger is officially innocent.
